Ness Botanic Gardens, located on the border of England and Wales between Liverpool and Chester, offers a peaceful retreat filled with horticultural beauty. Spanning 64 acres, the gardens provide stunning views of the River Dee and North Wales. It is a lovely destination for nature lovers. Visitors can explore its various gardens and study a diverse collection of plants, trees, and flowers. Read on to learn more about Ness Botanic Gardens.

A Rich History of Botanical Excellence

In 1898, Arthur Kilpin Bulley, a visionary botanist, purchased farmland in Ness and began transforming it into a family home surrounded by an expansive garden. His vision was to introduce rare and exotic plants to the British Isles.
In the early 1900s, Bulley took an innovative step to enrich his garden by sponsoring renowned plant hunters. These expeditions brought unique plant species that were unknown in British gardens.
Following Bulley’s death, his daughter Lois ensured that her father’s legacy would endure. In 1948, she gifted the gardens to the University of Liverpool to secure their preservation. Today, the gardens continue to thrive as a centre for education, conservation, and horticultural research.

Exploring the Gardens’ Highlights

One of the many charms of Ness Botanic Gardens is its year-round appeal. Different areas of the gardens have their unique appeal and beauty. Wildflower Meadow is especially breathtaking in the spring and summer with the cowslips and other colourful flowers in full bloom.
The water garden, on the other hand, is its most beautiful in the autumn. Trees such as dawn redwood and bald cypress grow in moist ground and give a stunning display. To the southwest of the ponds, maple trees add an extra texture to the garden.
The rock garden with its alpine meadow and tufa cliff is another major highlight of the gardens. It is one of the most popular parts of the garden and is a lovely spot to relax, take photos, and even get married.

Family-Friendly Activities

Ness Botanic Gardens is perfect for a family day out. The gardens feature free guided walks, giving everyone a chance to explore the gardens and learn about their history. These tours take place on the second and third Saturdays of each month and last around an hour.
An upcoming event, the Snow Queen Family Trail, is perfect for both adults and children, offering a delightful outdoor adventure for the whole family. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the charm of nature at its winter best. The event runs from 15 February to 3 March.
